Summary:
We meet Kael, a young boy in an orphanage who is cruelly bullied because of his disfigured face. Despite his kindness, he is ostracized and mistreated by the other children, who go as far as tricking him into eating a candy covered in dirt. One girl, Sisili, shows him a small act of kindness out of pity, which only fuels the jealousy and anger of Rey, a particularly cruel boy who views Kael as a threat. Rey plots to have Kael harmed or even eliminated from the orphanage, setting the stage for further conflict in Kael’s already tragic life.
